Indonesian Water Discharge Regulations

In Indonesia, water discharge regulations, particularly for wastewater, are governed by key legislation and ministerial decrees aimed at environmental protection and pollution control, including Law No. 32/2009 on Environmental Protection and Management, which sets the foundation for waste management; Government Regulation No. 82/2001 on Water Quality Management and Pollution Control, establishing water quality standards; Government Regulation No. 22/2021 on Hazardous and Toxic Waste Management, updating rules for handling hazardous waste; and Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 5/2014 on Wastewater Quality Standards, which specifies effluent standards for discharge into water bodies, mandating businesses to secure Wastewater Discharge Permits (IPLC), implement treatment through Wastewater Treatment Plants (IPAL), and comply with monitoring, reporting, and penalties such as fines or operational shutdowns for non-compliance to ensure sustainable environmental protection.
